KENT, Ohio – Even though it was a fall-ball intrasquad scrimmage, there was no shortage of intensity on Olga Mural Field Monday afternoon.

Gold jumped out 3-0 in the top of the first, lost the lead and ended the game with three unanswered runs to defeat Blue 6-4 at Schoonover Stadium.

Redshirt sophomore Cory Martin picked up the win in relief for Gold, while junior Brett Weibley took the loss. Sophomore Kyle McMillen recorded the save, striking out the side in only 13 pitches in the bottom of the seventh.

Sophomores Jimmy Rider and David Lyon led the victors by going 2-for-3. Redshirt junior Jared Bartholomew went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and junior Ben Klafczynski had one hit in two at-bats with a run scored.

Fifth-year senior Jared Humphreys began the game for a Gold with a single up the middle. Blue starter Robert Sabo then walked three-straight Gold batters to give up the first run of the game. A passed ball and an RBI groundout by freshman George Roberts scored a pair of runs to end the inning.

Blue answered in the bottom of the first when with two outs. With the bases empty, Klafczynski walked and scored on an RBI double by sophomore Travis Shaw. Bartholomew’s solo home run to right center in the third brought Blue within one of Gold.

In the bottom of the fourth, Blue took the lead on a pair of unearned runs. Freshman Jason Bagoly reached to begin the inning on a throwing error by the third baseman, followed by a walk by sophomore Nick Hamilton. Both runners advanced to second and third on a balk and then scored on a throwing error and a wild pitch.

In the sixth, Gold used speed on the base path to take the lead for good. Lyon legged out a triple to lead of the sixth and tied the ballgame when Roberts singled up the middle. Roberts stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and gave Gold a 5-4 lead when he scored on a wild pitch.

Gold manufactured an insurance run in the seventh. Humphreys walked to begin the inning, stole second and scored on senior Anthony Gallas’ RBI single.
