SALEM, Va.- Nineteen Golden Flashes took the mats on Sunday at the Hokie Open led by redshirt freshman Chase Skonieczny (141) and redshirt sophomore Brendan Barlow (285). Skonieczny won four straight matches, including a pin and two shutouts on his way to a second place finish. Meanwhile, Barlow's only loss en route to a third place was a 3-2 semifinal setback to defending national runner-up Konrad Dudziak of Duke.
"I was really pleased with the way Chase performed today," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said about Skonieczny bouncing back from an 0-2 Saturday in dual meets. "I told him sometimes you just need that one match to get you going and today he really responded."
Barlow almost had a go-ahead takedown late in the third period against Dudziak according to Andrassy. In his quarterfinal bout, Barlow needed only 13 seconds to pin Jack Danilkowicz of Virginia.
"Brendan had a great weekend," Andrassy said. "He was right there with a good wrestler (Dudziak) and really made him work."
The 174-pound bracket had bittersweet results for the Flashes as junior Chris Estep suffered an injury in his second bout, but redshirt freshman Keith Witt captured a fourth place. Witt upset top-seed and nationally-ranked Bagna Tovuujav of George Mason 3-2. Witt also registered a pair of pins going 4-2 on the day.
"Keith really stood to me today," Andrassy said. "Now that he's getting the opportunity, he's proving himself and he could be our guy at 174 this year."
