Golden Flashes led by as many as 19 in the second half

KENT, Ohio – Following just over two weeks of practice the Kent State men’s basketball team went up against outside competition for the first time this season as they earned a 75-66 exhibition win over Ohio Northern.  Paced by 24 points from senior Tyree Evans (Richmond, Va. / Motlow C.C. [Tenn.]) the Golden Flashes had three players in double figures.

Holding the Polar Bears to just 36 percent shooting in the first half, Kent State managed to take a 13-point (43-30) advantage at half time as Evans totaled 19 of his points.  Rated one of the nation’s best shooters by FOXsports.com, the senior guard shot 3-6 from three and was a perfect 6-6 at the foul line in 16 minutes of action during the first half.

The Golden Flashes appeared headed for a blowout at the start of the second half when they extend the lead to 19 points in the first four minutes.  But KSU let up on the defensive pressure and Ohio Northern slowly crept back into the game.  The Polar Bears whittled the margin down to nine (62-53) with just under eight minutes left before six straight points by the Golden Flashes in the next two minutes helped seal the win.

“Defensively, we still have a long way to go,” said Head Coach Geno Ford.  “We are not tough enough to put a team away.”

Behind Evans, sophomore Justin Greene (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Lincoln) shot 6-10 from the field and a perfect 4-4 at the line to total 16 points while grabbing a team high seven rebounds.  Freshman point guard Randal Holt (Bedford, Ohio / Glenville) was also in double figures with 12 points.  In addition Holt dished out seven assists and had just a single turnover.

“Since this was an exhibition game we wanted to play a lot of guys, said Ford.  “Some of the guys were good in areas, but overall a lot of them just played average.  We still have some work to do before the season starts, and I think we will get better.”

The Golden Flashes will travel to Wooster on Saturday for their final exhibition game before they open the season on Nov. 13 at against Samford.  Proceeds from Saturday’s game will go to benefit the Corey Cline Memorial Fund.
