Sophomore named MAC POW after scoring six goals in two games

KENT, Ohio — For the second time this season and fourth time in her career, sophomore forward Debbie Bell (Hamilton, New Zealand / Waikato) was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week.  Bell picks up the honor this week after she helped the Golden Flashes earn a weekend split to clinch a share of the MAC regular season title for the second straight season and 10th time in program history.

On Saturday, her goal in the 55th minute tied KSU with Miami; however, the RedHawks would prevail, 2-1.  It was a different story on Sunday as Bell found the back of the net five times for the Flashes in a win, 8-0, over Ball State. Her five goals tied for the NCAA single-game high this season and established a new career high.

Her six-goal outburst over the weekend put Bell at 28 for the season, which tied her with Loren Sherer of Connecticut for the top spot in Division I. The 28 goals also tie Bell with Jakolien van Eijk (1997) for the second most goals in a single season in Kent State history.

Bell is tied for the nation’s lead in goals per game with 1.47, and she is fifth in the nation in points per game with 3.21.

The Golden Flashes will look to claim the MAC Tournament Title for the second year in a row starting on Friday in Muncie, Indiana. KSU enters the tournament as the second seed and will face the winner of the Miami and Missouri State game at 2:30 p.m.
