Kent State Athletics had a record number of 238 student-athletes earn a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the 2009 spring semester

Eight programs earn 3.0 GPA or higher during Spring 2009 Semester

KENT, Ohio — In addition to the six outright Mid-American Conference Championships, the Kent State athletic department boasted quite a successful season in the classroom during the 2008-09 academic year with eight teams earning a grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 or higher during the spring semester.  Overall the athletic department compiled a 2.96 GPA during the spring to equal Kent State’s highest semester GPA since 1983 when official records were first kept by the university.

“It is quite an accomplishment when you consider our athletic and academic success combined with the graduation rate and the increased number of student-athletes with a 3.00 (GPA),” said Kent State Athletic Director Laing Kennedy, “It is very rewarding and a tribute to not only our coaches, academic counselors and administrators, but most importantly to the student-athletes.”

A record-setting total of 238 student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 GPA during the spring semester, including 25 with a perfect 4.00.  The women’s soccer team had a KSU best six student-athletes with a 4.0 during the spring, and also stake claimed the department’s top accumulative GPA with a 3.48.  The athletic department as a whole also has reached its highest ever accumulative GPA with 2.96 following the 2008-09 academic year.

The volleyball program with a GPA of 3.67 had the highest team GPA during the spring semester, just edging out the soccer program (3.64) as eight sports claimed a 3.00 or higher.  Soccer, softball (3.48) and field hockey (3.40) all posted their highest semester GPA’s in team history.

“The work ethic and academic priority of the student-athletes has been remarkable,” said Kennedy “Combine that with the impact of our Academic Resource Center along with the learning specialists, tutors and their commitment to teaching and practicing exceptional study habits.  It all helps us achieve the academic excellence we strive for everyday.”

On the field, Kent State claimed its fourth Reese Trophy this decade for having the best overall men’s athletic teams. Meanwhile, the Golden Flash women’s programs ranked second in the final Jacoby Trophy standings — their 12th consecutive top three finish.
