Seven teams that reached the post-season in 2008-09 await Head Coach Geno Ford and the Golden Flashes this winter

Golden Flashes to host Hispanic College Fund Classic to start the season

KENT, Ohio –  Starting with a three-team, three-day tournament at the M.A.C. Center in mid-November the Kent State men’s basketball team will play a 14-game non-conference schedule in the upcoming 2009-10 season.  Included in the 14-game slate are trips to NCAA regional finalist Pittsburgh and NCAA regional semifinalist Xavier in December as well as an ESPNU BracketBuster game at home in February.

“We wanted to put together a schedule that gives us the best opportunity to earn an invite to a post-season tournament and I think we were able to accomplish that,” said second year Head Coach Geno Ford.  “We have the potential to play seven teams that reached the post-season last year plus the ESPNU BracketBuster game, so we’ll face tough competition that will help enhance our RPI come March.”

The season officially gets underway on Nov. 13 when the Golden Flashes host Samford as part of the Hispanic College Fund Classic.  The weekend also includes games against NIT participant UAB (Nov. 14) and CBI participant Wisconsin-Green Bay (Nov. 15) to help make up KSU’s longest home stand to open a season since 1995-96.

After the classic the team travels to local rival Youngstown State on Nov. 18 as the schools meet for the fourth consecutive season.  Following an 11-day break, Kent State returns to action after the Thanksgiving Holiday with a return game from last year’s BracketBuster match-up against Morehead State.  The Golden Flashes travel to the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Champions on Nov. 29.

The road gets tougher for KSU in December with games at Xavier (Dec. 4) and at Pittsburgh (Dec. 12).  The perennial NCAA participants met in the regional semifinals last season with Pitt prevailing to advance to the Elite ‘8’.  A home contest against USCAA National Championship runner-up Rochester College (Mich.) on Dec. 8 interrupts a four-game swing that features three NCAA qualifiers.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will make its third visit to the M.A.C. Center in six years when KSU returns to action after the fall semester finals break on Dec. 20.  The Golden Flashes make their second trip to the Pittsburgh area on Dec. 22 when they face another 2009 NCAA team in Robert Morris in the first meeting between the schools since the 2001-02 campaign.

The calendar year ends with a trip out west to California on Dec. 29-30.  Taking part in the Santa Clara Cable Car Classic, the Golden Flashes match-up against Wofford in the first round.  KSU will then face either Northeastern or Santa Clara the next day.

The Golden Flashes first ever meeting with Norfolk State at the M.A.C. Center on Jan. 4 wraps up the non-league slate.  During the weekend of Feb. 20, Kent State will once again participate in the ESPNU BracketBusters event marking the eighth straight year the program has taken part.

Kent State has qualified for the post-season in 10 of the last 11 years.  The Golden Flashes have eight letterwinners, returning from last year’s squad that posted a 19-15 overall record and earned a CollegeInsider.com Tournament berth.

KSU will get an early tune-up for 2009-10 with a 10-day, four-game trip throughout Italy at the end of August.
