Kent, Ohio- The Kent State defense made stops every time it needed to in an 18-0 victory over Coastal Carolina Thursday night (Sept. 3) at Dix Stadium.  The season opening victory marked the Golden Flashes’ first shutout since 1994.

Senior running back Eugene Jarvis rushed for 141 yards, adding 30 yards receiving and 77 yards on punt returns.

Despite 240 yards of offense in the first half, the Flashes led just 2-0 heading into the locker room thanks to a safety by senior defensive end Kevin Hogan.

A 33-yard punt return by Jarvis led to the first touchdown of the game midway through the third quarter.  The score came on a five-yard plunge by Andre Flowers to give the Flashes a 9-0 lead.

Early in the fourth quarter, quarterback Giorgio Morgan connected with tight end Jon Simpson for a 24-yard gain, which led to a four-yard touchdown scamper by Jarvis.  The drive was set up by a 27-yard punt return from Jarvis.

Coastal Carolina had threatened late in the third quarter taking the ball down to the Kent State 37, before Monte Simmons forced a fumble that was recovered by Aaron Hull.

Morgan completed a career-high 21 passes for 201 yards.  Freshman Tyshon Goode accounted 84 of those yards on six catches in his first collegiate game.  It was the first time since 2005 a KSU quarterback completed 20 or more passes in a game.

An errant Chanticleer snap through the end zone on a punt attempt gave the Flashes their second safety of the game.

Junior linebacker Cobrani Mixon led both sides with 12 tackles, helping KSU hold the Chanticleers to just 185 yards of total offense. It was the first time since the 2007 home opener a KSU opponent was held under 200 yards.

The Golden Flashes will take their 1-0 record on the road next weekend, visiting Boston College Sept. 12.
