For his performance last Thursday (Sept. 3) against Coastal Carolina, fifth-year senior running back Eugene Jarvis was named Kent State Athlete of the Week Monday (Sept. 7). In their 2009 opener, the Golden Flashes upended the Chanticleers 18-0. Kent State was among only three Mid-American Conference teams to win its season opener.
Jarvis recorded 265 all-purpose yards for the game, which currently leads the country in week one. He rushed for 141 yards on 27 carries, caught three passes for 30 yards, returned five punts for 77 yards and returned a kickoff for 17 yards.
In the third quarter, Jarvis returned a Coastal Carolina punt 33-yards to the Chanticleers five-yard line to set up the first KSU touchdown of the season. A 27-yard punt return a quarter later by Jarvis set up his own four-yard touchdown run to give Kent State a 16-0 lead.
With the touchdown, Jarvis surpassed former Kent State quarterback Julian Edelman with 23 career rushing touchdowns. With 27 carries, he also moved into third place in career rushing attempts with 656, surpassing former Kent State quarterback Joshua Cribbs.
Kent State returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Chesnutt Hill, Mass. to face Boston College. Kick-off is set 2 p.m.
