BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Kent State wrapped up play at the Las
Vegas Collegiate Showdown in blustery conditions Wednesday at 6,223-yard, par
72 Boulder Creek Golf Club. The Flashes finished eighth in the 18-team field
after carding a final round 311 (+23).
No. 17 Arizona held on to its second round lead with a
12-over par round of 300 to finish the 54-hole event at 14-over par, 879. No.
15 Florida was five strokes back after carding the best round of the day (297),
while No. 19 Louisville was in third at 886. The Golden Flashes finished tied
with Idaho at 901 (+37).
Sophomore Mercedes Germino finished fifth at three-over
(219) after tying for the third-best round of the day with a one-under 71 to
jump 10 places in the standings. Junior Martina Gavier and sophomore Mandi Morrow tied for 36th at 228 (+12), while junior Sarah Bradley was
tied for 57th at 232. Sophomore Shamira Marshall rounded out the KSU
contingent in 83rd at 240.
Arizona's Sherlyn Popelka carded her third consecutive under
par round (69-69-71) to claim medalist honors at seven-under par, 209. Louisville's
Sara-Maude Juneau was two shots back, while Arkansas' Kelli Shean was in third
at minus-three.
Done with the fall portion of its schedule, Kent State is
next in action on Feb. 7-9, 2010 at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.
