MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan (14-8, 7-5) held off Kent State (11-14, 4-8) in the first two sets and easily won the third in a 3-0 win (25-21, 25-22, 25-11) Saturday night (Oct. 31) in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
Sophomores Liva Brivule and Maigan Larsen led the team with five kills each while Brivule led the team with eight assisted blocks. Senior Jenny Keck added 12 assists.
Kent State out-blocked the Chippewas 8-7 but CMU outhit KSU .352 (43 kills, 12 errors on 88 attempts) to .107 (24 kills, 15 errors on 84 attempts).
In the first set after Central Michigan took a 4-2 lead, Kent State quickly rebounded with a 5-0 run for a 7-4 lead after a Chippewa attack error, a ball handling error and a pair of KSU double blocks. CMU retook the lead with a 5-0 run of its own and never looked back in a four-point win in the opening set.
In the second set, neither team could take more than a two-point lead until near the end. However, Central Michigan maintained a small lead the majority of the set and was able to take a 23-20 lead late. A pair of kills by Brivule brought Kent State within one, but a Kaitlyn Hurt kill and a KSU attack error gave the home team a 2-0 lead.
In the final set, Central Michigan jumped out to a 12-3 lead and won the finale by 14. The Chippewas outhit the Golden Flashes .609-.000 in the final set.
Kent State returns to action next weekend for its final home regular season matches next weekend against Akron and Buffalo. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.
