KENT, Ohio- Kent State senior defensive end Monte Simmons, sophomore punter Matt Rinehart and freshman wide receiver Tyshon Goode were all recognized by College Football Performance Awards on Sunday (Nov. 1). Each player earned Honorable Mention Performer of the Week at their respective positions.
Simmons recorded three sacks and five solo tackles in the Golden Flashes' 26-14 win over Western Michigan Saturday. He played a key role in holding the Broncos to just 38 yards rushing. Simmons was one of 10 defensive linemen to appear on the Performer of the Week list.
Goode made a career-high 11 catches for 198 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns. He became the first KSU player to have at least 10 catches in a game since 2004 and the first player with at least 175 yards receiving since 2005. Goode also made a diving one-handed grab for a 40-yard gain, which set up a field goal. He was one of nine receivers around the nation to be recognized.
Rinehart booted the second longest punt in school history Saturday, an 80-yard smash. It was the longest punt by a KSU player in the last 80 years. Rinehart is averaging 41.1 yards per kick with 14 punts inside opponent's 20 yard line.
Now 4-1 in Mid-American Conference play, the Golden Flashes will take on archrival Akron Saturday, Nov. 7, at Infocision Stadium.
