CLEVELAND — Kent State junior defensive end Monte Simmons (Swissvale, Pa./Woodland Hills) was named the East Division Defensive Player of the Week by the Mid-American Conference on Monday. The honor is the first of Simmons’ career.
Simmons joins teammates Cobrani Mixon (Sept. 7), Brian Lainhart (Sept. 21) and Kevin Hogan (Oct. 26) as Flashes to earn Defensive Player of the Week accolades this season. The four honorees matches the 2001 season for the most in school history.
Simmons led another strong defensive effort, as the Flashes held Western Michigan to less than 300 yards of total offense, including just 38 yards on the ground. Included in his five tackles were a career-high 3.0 sacks (tied for fourth in KSU game records) and a forced fumble. Thanks to 4.5 sacks in the last two games, Simmons now stands second in the MAC with 7.5 sacks.
Tied for second place in the MAC East and winners of three straight, the Golden Flashes (5-4, 4-1 MAC) make the short trip 14 miles west to face Akron (1-7, 0-4 MAC) this Saturday (Nov. 7) at 3:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Net Ohio, as part of the national ESPN GamePlan package and on ESPN360.com.
