For his success this weekend in duals with the Virginia Tech Hokies, the Chattanooga Mocs and at the Hokie Open, redshirt sophomore-heavyweight Brendan Barlow (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) has been named Kent State Athlete of the Week. On Saturday (Nov. 7), Kent State upended nationally-ranked Virginia Tech 20-18 in its home gym and Chattanooga 22-15.
Against the Hokies, Barlow stepped to the mat needing bonus points as Kent State was down 18-14. He did not disappoint, building a double-digit lead before pinning VT’s Tim Miller 40 seconds into the third period. The fall gave the Golden Flashes their eighth win in their last nine road matches dating back to December 2007. Barlow concluded a perfect Saturday with a 3-1 decision over Matt Lettner.
Sunday during the unscored Hokie Open, Barlow placed third in his weight class with his only loss to returning All-American Konrad Dudziak of Duke 3-2. Included in his 3-1 record during the tournament was a 12-2 major decision over Lettner and a 13-second pin of Jack Danilkowicz of Virginia.
Kent State returns to action next weekend when it travels to Brockport, N.Y. for the annual Oklahoma Gold Tournament.
