Former Kent State head coach Frank Truitt was inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame on Nov. 6 in Columbus. One of 20 inductees, he served in the United States Army during World War II. His military work earned him three Battle Stars for Ardennes Forest, Rhine and the Bulge.

At Kent State, Truitt took over the men’s basketball team from 1966-74 after coaching at Louisiana State and Ohio State. In 1969 he brought Kent State its first winning season in 20 years. He also spent five years coaching golf and four years coaching soccer. His men’s golf team won the 1977 Mid-American Conference Championship, and he was crowned MAC golf coach of the year.

Truitt was well respected as a coach that taught student-athletes about the game and about life. After retiring in 1978, he moved to Columbus, where he now works as a sales associate for Coldwell Banker Real Estate.

The Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame was created in 1992 to honor the state’s veterans. Each year nominations are accepted for Hall of Fame inductees. An executive committee of veterans then gives recommendations to the governor for induction.
