College Station, Texas - Kent State University was the recipient of two Diversity in Athletics awards, named anually by The Laboratory for Diversity in Sport. KSU was one of eight institutions to claim an award for Diversity Strategy and one of 10 schools honored for the graduation success rate of its African American male student-athletes.
"This recognition is a tribute to the hard work of our student-athletes and our staff," said Associate Athletic Director Bob Heller. "Our diversity strategy began with our University’s strategic plan. Our athletic department and the University community at large recognize the value and contribution diversity offers to our entire student body. Our goal as an athletic department is to be a leader of Kent State’s diversity efforts."
"The success rate of our African American male student-athletes is a tribute to: our coaches, who recognize and recruit outstanding students, the young men who made the personal commitment to earn their respective undergraduate degrees, and finally our academic support staff who provide the necessary guidance and support system to facilitate success. Many of these young men are the first in their families to earn a college degree and our department is so fortunate to play a part in each of their personal success."
The Laboratory for Diversity in Sport at Texas A&M University is dedicated to producing and disseminating research related to all forms of diversity within the sport context. Its research allows for a greater understanding of how diversity impacts individuals and teams, as well as the overall benefits of diversity.
The Diversity in Athletics awards recognize NCAA Division I athletic departments that excel in several areas of diversity. The awards are based off of data collected from all NCAA Division I athletic departments via questionnaires of administrators in each department.
