Junior 184-pound wrestler Casey Newburg (Union, Ohio) has been named the Kent State Student-Athlete of the Week.
Newburg won the 184-pound title Sunday (Dec. 18) at the Cleveland State Open. After missing action with a knee injury, Newburg appeared back at full strength, going 4-0 with a second period pin over Ashland's Tyler Porter and a 17-1 technical fall against Notre Dame's Charles Mason. Newburg topped Billy Curling of Old Dominion 7-3 in the semifinals and Eastern Michigan's Khodor Hoballoh 3-2 in the finals.
The Golden Flashes open Mid-American Conference competition Wednesday (Dec. 21) at Northern Illinois. Kent State will also take on Cleveland State at the Convocation Center later that day.
