Michael Porrini, Men's Basketball

Senior men's basketball guard Michael Porrini (Massillon, Ohio) has been named the Kent State Student-Athlete of the Week.

The 2010-11 Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year led the Golden Flashes to a 2-0 start to the 2011-12 campaign last week, averaging 11.5 points, 6.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals while shooting 8-12 (67%) from the floor and 5-6 (83%) from the foul line. Porrini did the bulk of his damage in the second half, scoring 19 of his 23 points and grabbing all six rebounds for the week. His efforts helped lead to two dominating second halves for Kent State. All 11 of his points and all five of his rebounds came after the halftime break to help the Flashes erase a 33-28 halftime deficit and secure a 70-60 season-opening victory Tuesday (Nov. 15) at West Virginia. The win stood as the first true road win over a BCS school for the Golden Flashes during the regular season in 41 years. Porrini came out of the break with a vengeance again Saturday (Nov. 19) in the team's home opener at the M.A.C. Center, scoring eight points in the first five minutes of the second half as Kent State extended a two-point halftime lead to a 13-point margin en route to a 77-78 triumph over Alcorn State.

Kent State continues its five-game home stand with a showdown against regional rival Cleveland State Tuesday (Nov. 22) at 7:30 pm at the M.A.C. Center.  For ticket information, contact the Kent State Athletics Ticket Office at 330-672-2244.
