KENT, Ohio Kent State University senior DeANDRE HAYNES (Detroit, Mich./Southwestern) has received honorable mention on the 2005-06 Associated Press All-America mens basketball team, which was announced recently.
A 6-1 guard, Haynes averaged 13.0 points, 3.9 assists and 2.7 rebounds in leading the Golden Flashes to a sweep of the Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament championships. Kent State also claimed their eighth straight 20-win season (25-9) the second-most wins in school history and eighth straight postseason tournament bid, as the Flashes advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2002.
Haynes was named the 2006 MAC Player of the Year, the first Kent State player to ever receive the award, and he was previously an honorable mention All-MAC pick in 2004 and an All-MAC Tournament selection also in 2004. He is the third Kent State player to earn AP All-America honors, joining ANTHONY GRIER and ANTONIO GATES. Grier received honorable mention following the 1984-85 season and Gates was honorable mention after the 2002-03 season.
A four-year starter at point guard, Haynes concluded his career as Kent States all-time leader in assists and steals and he finished 10th in career scoring. Haynes became the 23rd 1,000-point scorer in KSU history, closing his career with 1,259 points. He also posted 625 assists and 229 steals, which were the sixth- and eight-best totals all-time in the MAC. Haynes also played in 129 career games, tied for fourth most all-time at Kent State.
In 2005-06, Haynes posted numerous outstanding performances. He scored a career-high 31 points against Concordia (Calif.) Dec. 21, becoming the first Kent State player since Gates in 2003 to score 30 points in a game. He also scored 24 points, hitting seven three-point field goals in a win against Northern Illinois (Feb. 12). Haynes was just the fourth KSU player to hit seven three-pointers in a single game. Perhaps Haynes most dramatic shot of the season came Feb. 18 against Butler in a BracketBusters presented by eBay game, as he drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key with just seconds remaining to force overtime, and an eventual Kent State victory.
Haynes was one of 47 honorable mention selections on 2005-06 team, in addition to the 15 members of the first, second and third teams.
