Kent State recently announced six team captains for the 2013 season as voted upon by players. All six choices were seniors. Dri Archer, Phil Huff and Pat McShane will represent the offense, while Roosevelt Nix, Darius Polk and Luke Wollet will represent the defense.
"They've all been through a lot here," Head Coach Paul Haynes said. Voting on captains isn't a popularity contest…it's about who can lead a football team. And who's going to make the best decisions for the team."
Looking to become only the fourth player in conference history to be a four-time All-MAC First Team selection, Nix earned the rare distinction of being a two-time captain. Here is what Haynes said about each player.
Nix
I think last year Rosie was voted on because of his play. This year he was voted for because of his leadership and I think he's even starting to notice it. More guys are coming to him and asking him questions.
Archer
Dri's electric and has gotten a lot of recognition, but players also see his hard work and dedication. He always shows up and goes to work.
Huff
Phil's not the most vocal guy, but he's productive and he's earned the respect of a lot his teammates for what he does on the field and the way he carries himself off the field.
Wollet
Luke is an emotional leader. They voted for him because they know they will get every ounce of Luke on Saturdays. He will end the game on empty and that's why they respect him so much.
McShane
Pat is a kid that came in and played a lot and guys respect because of his work ethic. He's always in the film room. He's the first in the weight room and he's been very productive for us.
Polk
Darius is a go-to guy for a lot of players on the team…not just talking football, but if they need something off the field…the way he carries himself, his energy and everything he brings to the table.
Led by its six senior captains, Kent State opens the 2013 season Thursday, Aug. 29 against Liberty at 6 p.m.
