Three incoming football players will join Kent State at the beginning of 2015 Spring Semester after signing national letters of intent.ย Johnny Woods (Smiths Station, Ala), Anthony Johnson (Miami, Fla.) and Carlos Pickett (Brunswick, Ga.) are all expected to participate in spring football in March and will be eligible to play in 2015.
"It's an advantage for them to start academically and get an extra semester toward their graduation," Head Coach Paul Haynes said.ย "Secondly, it's an advantage for them for them to get around the team and learn the dos and don'ts of the program."
Woods caught 53 passes for 924 yards and six touchdowns as a senior at Smiths Station High School in 2013.ย Defensively, he totaled three interceptions, two sacks and 54 tackles.ย Woods will have four years of eligibility.
"Johnny is a tall (6-3) wide receiver, who is very athletic," Haynes said.ย "We are looking for him to come in and compete for playing time right away."
The Golden Flashes also added height on the defensive side of the ball in Johnson, who comes to Kent State from Pasadena City College (Cal.) and will have three years of eligibility.ย At 6-4, 210 pounds he saw action at linebacker, but could be used as a defensive end at Kent State.ย This past fall, Johnson tallied 9.0 tackles for loss in nine games.
"Anthony's a long, tall pass rush rusher, originally from Miami, Fla.," Haynes said.ย "He'll give us depth at the Leo position."
Pickett, a defensive back, recently graduated a semester early from Brunswick High School.ย This past offseason, he played in the AT&T Georgia Junior Bowl.ย Pickett was also an honorable mention all-region selection following his junior year.
"Carlos is a tough, hard-nose hitter," Haynes said. ย "He's very athletic and gives us depth at safety."
Kent State closed out its 2014 season with a 27-24 victory over archrival Akron.ย The Golden Flashes will announce the rest of its incoming 2015 class on National Signing Day (Feb. 4).
