KENT, Ohio- Chase Johnson has continued his success from his rookie campaign with the Kent State men's golf team into the summer where he recently captured the Northern Amateur title and finished fourth at the Ohio Amateur.
"Chase has enjoyed a fantastic summer," said Kent State Director of Golf/Head Men's Golf Coach Herb Page. "He has worked extremely hard on his game and is seeing the fruits of that labor. We are looking forward to the start of school and seeing how his summer success jumpstarts his sophomore season."
The win at the 2015 Northern Amateur, hosted at Sand Creek Country Club in Chesterton, Indiana, did not come easy for Johnson, who finished the 54-hole stroke play tournament in a tie for first with a 7-under 209 (70-65-74).
Johnson, a Barberton, Ohio native, led the field heading into the final round but relinquished the opportunity to win in regulation after a bogey on the 18th hole. The bogey dropped him into a tie for the lead with North Carolina State's Jacob McBride, who also could have won it outright if not for a double bogey on the 19th hole dropping him into a tie with Johnson.
The two played a three-hole cumulative playoff where both Johnson and McBride had opportunities that they couldn't capitalize on which sent them into sudden death. After birdies on the first hole, Johnson was able to chip in from just off the green of the 123-yard par-3. McBride, who was just 10 feet of the pin, came up short.
During the 2015 Ohio Amateur Championship at Zanesville Country Club in early July, Johnson finished just two strokes out of first place with a 2-under 286 for fourth overall.
Johnson is now competing in the Western Amateur at Rich Harvest Farms on Aug. 3-8, one of the most prestigious amateur tournaments in the world. Former Golden Flash, John Hahn '11, won the tournament in 2009.
