MAC Presents Kent State with Ninth Jacoby Trophy

CLEVELAND - The Mid-American Conference presented Kent State with the Jacoby Trophy Wednesday night, for excellence in women's competition during the 2015-16 academic year.ย With 10 sports, the Golden Flashes carried a score of 9.525 to lead all MAC institutions.ย Eastern Michigan came in second at 8.409.
Kent State won conference championships in field hockey, gymnastics, golf and softball. ย The Flashes also earned an East Division title from volleyball, got an East Division runner-up finish in soccer and placed third at the indoor track & field championships.
"This is a direct reflection of the hard work our student-athletes and coaches continue to put forth," said Director of Athletics Joel Nielsen.ย "It's a great honor for our university to have this tradition of success.ย Every year, they find ways to meet our high expectations academically and athletically."
Since the Jacoby Trophy was first presented in 1983, Kent State has won it nine times, including eight trophies since 1996.ย The Flashes also own eight runner-up finishes since 1996.
The Golden Flashes also had a strong showing in men's sports with a third place finish in the Reese Trophy standings.ย Baseball and golf each won championships, while wrestling was the regular season runner-up.ย Since 1996 the Flashes have combined for 29 top two finishes in the Reese and Jacoby standings.

For the Reese and Jacoby Trophies, points are awarded based on each school's finish, with the overall total divided by the number of sports sponsored by each school.

The men's trophy is named for former MAC Commissioner David E. Reese, who was the first MAC Commissioner and served the conference from its inception in 1946 until 1964.

The women's trophy is named for former MAC Commissioner Fred Jacoby, who was the MAC Commissioner from 1971-82 and is credited with incorporating women's athletics into the conference structure.
