Stypinski Wins All-Around Title at OSU Quad

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior Rachel Stypinski placed in the top two in three events as she captured the first individual all-around title of her collegiate career at Saturday's season-opening quad meet at St. John Arena. The Golden Flashes earned a team score of 192.975 to finish fourth behind No. 22 Ohio State (195.800), No. 11 Michigan (195.725) and Washington (195.175).
Kent State (0-3) had its strongest performance on floor exercise with a 48.975, which was second among competing teams. The Flashes earned a 48.575 on bars, 48.200 on vault and 47.225 on beam.
Stypinski, the 2016 Mid-American Conference Gymnast of the Year, posted an impressive 39.400 in her first regular season all-around competition as a collegian to best Washington's Hailey Burleson by 0.200 points. She also won the individual bars title with a 9.875 and took second on floor (9.925) and beam (9.875).
The Flashes had three seniors join Stypinski for a total of four gymnasts in the top 10 on floor. Jordan Hardison and Samantha Gordon both scored a 9.825 to tie for fifth, while Skyelee Lamano earned a 10th-place finish with a 9.800.
Junior Brooke Timko hit a strong bars routine and scored a 9.825 to tie for third.
Sophomore Dara Williams led Kent State on vault, tying for 11th with a 9.750. Stypinski was right behind her with a 9.725 to tie for 13th.
Kent State opens its home and Mid-American Conference schedule against Western Michigan on Friday, January 20 inside of the M.A.C. Center.
