Kent State Athletics Supports Breast Cancer Awareness with Pink Week

KENT, Ohio -- Approximately one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women.

The Kent State Department of Intercollegiate Athletics joins the fight against breast cancer with its annual “Pink Week.” The M.A.C. Center will serve as the hub of activities aimed at raising both awareness and money to battle the disease.

“Pink Week” kicks off with Wednesday’s women’s basketball game against Ohio and continues Thursday as the men’s basketball team squares off with Buffalo. Both contests are scheduled to tipoff at 7 p.m. Fans will have the opportunity to enter a raffle to win one of 10 Kent State sports experience packages at the women’s basketball game, with all proceeds going toward breast cancer research. The women’s basketball team will be sporting pink accessories during the game against the Bobcats in support of the fight against breast cancer.

“Pink Week” culminates in the Kent State gymnastics team’s annual “Flip For the Cure” meet. The No. 19 Golden Flashes battle Western Michigan in a key Mid-American Conference meet, but both squads will join forces to fight breast cancer by sporting pink uniforms. Fans are encouraged to get in on the act and deck themselves out for the chance to become the “pinkest fan” and win a pink tumbling mat. There will also be an opportunity to enter a raffle to win one of 36 prize baskets, which include items such as the iPod Shuffle.

Breast cancer survivors will be recognized during all three “Pink Week” events. Pink t-shirts are on sale all week for $7 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Kent State Student Center and will also be sold at the M.A.C. Center during the “Pink Week” events.

Be sure to do your part by coming out to the M.A.C. Center for all three events and showing your support for the Golden Flashes and breast cancer awareness. For ticket information, call (330) 672-2244.
