Baseball Drops Saturday Matinee 8-1 to Virginia Tech
Wilmington, N.C. - Kent State (0-3) tallied ten runs, yet was unable to get enough runs across, losing 8-1 to Virginia Tech (2-0) Saturday (Feb. 16) afternoon.
"We couldn't put things together," Coach Scott Strciklin said after the game. "We'd have a couple of good at-bats in a row, but then have a bad at-bat. We swung the bat well again, we just left too many guys on base."
Virginia Tech jump on the board early, scoring a run in the bottom of the first. Kent State answered right back in the top of the next inning, tying the game after Alex Miklos doubled and came home on a two-out base hit by Jason Bagoly.
However, the Hokies plated two more in the third to take the lead for good. They added five insurance runs in the sixth inning, including a one-out three-run homerun that ended Kent State starting pitcher Casey Wilson's day.
The Flashes came close to scoring in the 5th and 8th innings, but were not able to bring runners home, leaving men on the corners in both.
Defensively they showed improvement, only committing two errors whereas they had nine through the first two games. They stayed hot at the plate, now out-hitting their opponents 36-25 through three games.
Stricklin has no worries about the team fixing the early-season kinks and playing to the level everyone, including themselves, expects them to be at, despite now starting the season 0-3.
"It's a matter of getting better as a team overall, and I think we're going to get there," he said. "It's only a matter of time."
T.J. Sutton was the only Golden Flash to have a multi-hit day. He finished 2-for-4. Freshman Justin Wagler had a triple in his one at-bat.
Wilson (0-1) got the loss as the starter, going 5.1 innings while allowing 11 hits, seven runs, two walks and striking out two.
Kent State gets a rematch with UNC Wilmington on Sunday (Feb. 17) after they suffered a 7-6 extra-innings defeat from the Seahawks in their second game this season.
"We're excited to play again," said Stricklin. "We are excited to get back out there and end the weekend on a positive note. We're going to get better, we just have to be more consistent."
Game time is set for 12:00 pm.
