KENT, Ohio — It’s been quite a year for former Kent State All-American Joshua Cribbs: a second Pro Bowl start, a first-team All-Pro nod from the Associated Press, becoming the NFL’s all-time leader with eight career kickoff return touchdowns, signing a new contract and earning a spot on the NFL’s All-Decade Team — just to name a few of the highlights. Now you can add college graduate to the Washington, D.C. native’s resume.
A communication studies major with a concentration in public communication, Cribbs was one of 46 current or former Golden Flashes student-athletes to receive their diplomas in Kent State’s annual spring commencement ceremonies held Saturday in the M.A.C. Center.
“It means everything to finally finish something I started so long ago,” Cribbs said. “It feels great — like scoring a touchdown. This is one of the biggest touchdowns I can score right now: finishing my degree.”
“The crowd reaction was great,” Cribbs said of the thunderous ovation he received upon being handed his diploma. “I knew there were a lot of Browns fans in the building and I loved it. That’s why I love being here and why I wanted to stay in Cleveland.”
A standout with the Flashes from 2001-04, Cribbs became just the second player in NCAA history with a pair of 1,000-yard seasons both passing and rushing. The program’s all-time leader in passing yards (7,169), completions (616), attempts (1,123), total yards (10,839) and total touchdowns (41), he also ranks third in career rushing yards (3,670).
“Josh is one of the finest young men that you’ll ever come across and the fact that he stuck with it and earned his diploma speaks volumes about his character,” Kent State head coach Doug Martin said. “As proud as we are of him, he’s just as proud of Kent State and has never forgotten where he came from. That’s unique in a professional athlete.”
