MAC Tabs Cortez Special Teams Player of the Week

CLEVELAND -  Kent State sophomore placekicker Freddy Cortez (Fort Meade, Fla.) was named Mid-American Conference East Division Special Teams Player of the Week Monday.  The Golden Flashes have earned MAC East awards in back-to-back weeks as Spencer Keith claimed Offensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 6.

Cortez converted field goals from 45 and 41 yards in a 26-13 loss at Boston College on Saturday.  It was the first time in his career Cortez has made two field goals of 40-plus yards and the first kick was a yard shy of his career-long.

Cortez has made 14-of-15 field goal attempts over his last seven games, including all four this season and seven in a row overall.  He has connected on two field goals in each of those seven games.

“Freddy has been outstanding,” Head Coach Doug Martin said.  “Along with his field goals, he’s been putting the ball right where we need it on kickoffs.”

As a freshman last September, Cortez earned MAC East Special Teams Player of the Week honors after going 3-for-3 on field goal attempts in a 29-19 victory over Miami

The Golden Flashes (1-1) visit Penn State (1-1) Saturday (Sept. 18) with a noon kickoff on ESPN 2.
