Kent State Retired Numbers

Jack Lambert | 99 |
Jim Corrigall | 79 |
Eric Wilkerson | 40 |
| Probably one of the most widely acclaimed numbers in Kent State
football history is 99, which was worn proudly by Jack Lambert,
former star middle linebacker for the Pitts-burgh Steelers and a
perennial All-Pro selection who is a member of the Pro Football
Hall of Fame. “The Stork,” as he was known at KSU
because of his gangly stature, terrorized opponents for three
seasons (1971-73) and became one of the most feared and respected
defensive standouts ever to emerge from the MAC. |
Another football jersey number honored with retirement is number 79. It was worn by former player and head coach Jim Corrigall, a veteran of many professional campaigns in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts. He became the first Kent State player to be accorded All-Mid-American Conference first-team honors for three consecutive years (1967, ’68 and ’69). In addition, he was the first Golden Flash player to be named team captain two straight years. |
In 1989, a third football jersey was retired when Eric Wilkerson’s number 40 uniform was taken out of circulation. Wilkerson rewrote the Golden Flash record books with his rushing and kick return exploits, setting numerous single-season and career records along the way. He set Mid-American Conference records for all-purpose and rushing yardage and led all NCAA Division I-A players in all-purpose yardage as a junior and ranked nationally in three different categories his senior season. |
Josh Cribbs | 9 |

Cribbs, a native of Washington, D.C., became just the second player in NCAA history to record two "double-1,000 yard" seasons (both passing and rushing). For his career, Cribbs ranks first in the Kent State record book for completions (616), passing attempts (1,123), passing yards (7,169), rushing touchdowns (38), total plays (1,755 - 5th in MAC history), total yards (10,839 - 7th in MAC history), points (246) and touchdowns (41). The 2004 honorable mention All-American also ranks third in school annals in rushing yards (3,670) and has gone on to earn a pair of starting Pro Bowl nods with the Cleveland Browns. He holds the NFL record with eight kickoff returns for touchdowns and has three punt returns for touchdowns. |
