Gymnastics Headed To Iowa State For Season Opening Meet
Kent, Ohio -- Kent State Gymnastics is set to start their regular season with a dual meet at Iowa State (1-0, 0-0) on Friday, January 11th at 6:30 p.m Central Time. There will be a live webcast of the meet at http://cyclones.tv.
The match will be the first competition for the preseason MAC favorite Golden Flashes since their appearance at Pittsburgh's Blue-Gold meet just over a month ago. Standouts for the meet were senior Rachel Guida (Cumberland, R.I.) and freshman Katlin Isaacs (Mount Airy, N.C.). Guida turned in the highest score of the day on bars with a 9.800 while Isaacs finished first in the floor excercise with a showing of 9.800. Claiming the top spot for Kent State on the balance beam was sophomore Amiah Mims (Indianapolis, Ind.).
Returning to compete for the Golden Flashes this season is junior Marie Case (Erie, Pa.), the 2012 Mid-American Conference Gymnast of the Year and 2012 Academic All-MAC member. She will look to lead the team to another successful campaign in 2013.
Friday's meet will be Kent State's fourth ever competition against the Cyclones. The Golden Flashes trail Iowa State in the series all-time, posting a 1-2 record. However, Kent State came away victorious in the last meeting between the schools in 2011 by posting a 195.450-194.800 win. That outcome led to Kent State's entry into the 2011 NCAA Championships, a first for the program. Both teams are currently sitting just outside the top 25 nationally as each team has received votes. Last season the Cyclones made the Salt Lake City NCAA Regionals and finished the season ranked No. 24 in the country.
The Cyclones have held one home meet so far this season where they defeated Wisconsin-La Crosse 191.525-184.255. Watch for sophomore Caitlin Brown to make an impact for Iowa State as she placed first in the all-around by tying for first in the vault and floor events.
Kent State returns to action Saturday, January 19 at 6:00 p.m where they will visit Penn State in a meet which also includes Minnesota and Towson. It will be showcased on television on the Big Ten Network.
