Rhodes Arena. For the second straight game the Golden Flashes put together a solid first half and for the second straight game it wasn't enough as the Zips used a 12-0 run to take the lead, then a 16-4 run to put the game away.
Junior guard Randal Holt (Cleveland, Ohio) led Kent State with a career high 27 points adding three assists and four steals. Holt racked up 14 of his points in the first half shooting 3-3 from beyond the arc to help build a 42-34 halftime advantage for the Golden Flashes. The 42 points marked the sixth time in the last seven games that Kent State have scored 38+ in the first period.
Kent State still led by as many as nine (55-46) seven minutes into the second half following a pair of free throws from freshman guard Kris Brewer (Memphis, Tenn.). Akron, which was just 3-12 from three up to that point, all the sudden found its touch connecting on four straight from beyond the arc over the next two minutes to wipe out the Kent State lead.
Senior forward Justin Greene (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finally ended the Zips spurt with two of his 11 points. The teams would then trade baskets and possessions over the next three minutes before Greene, who also had seven rebounds and three steals, went to the bench with his fourth foul of the game at 8:54. With Greene out, Akron took advantage stringing together a 16-4 run over the five minutes that put the game away.
Nick Harney, who had 10 points to the decisive stretch lead the Zips with 21 points in 14 minutes of action.
Kent State had nine steals and a 19-1 edge in points off turnovers in the first half, but managed just one steals and was out scored 12-2 in the category in the second half.
