Kent State Tied For Seventh After Day One At Bank of Tennessee
15-team field battles 20-25 mph winds
JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. — The 20-25 mph winds were the story on the first day of play at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate @ Blackthorn Club, but despite the conditions the Golden Flashes posted a 303 team score and sit tied for seventh in the 15-team field.
Sophomore Corey Conners (Listowel, Ontario) led a closely contested line-up for Kent State as only three shots separated the five players. Conners, who shot a 75, began the round with birdies on Nos. 10, 12 before an eagle on No. 14 dropped him to four-under. The front nine didn't go nearly as well for the second year golfer as he played the final seven holes in six over, including a triple bogey on No. 4. He heads into the second round tied for 24th.
Taylor Pendrith (Richmond Hill, Ontario), Kyle Kmiecik (Avon, Ohio) and Kevin Miller (Dover, Ohio) were right behind Conners as each shot a 76.
Senior Mackenzie Hughes (Dundas, Ontario), the defending tournament champion, shot a 78.
Competing as an individual freshman Nick Scott (Union, Ohio) made three birdies as he carded a two-over 74 and is tied for 15th.
Second round action continues tomorrow starting at 10:10 am for Kent State. The Golden Flashes will be paired with Louisville and Wake Forest.
