KENT, Ohio – Following a year full of several notable victories this year, Team Canada team member and Kent State senior Mackenzie Hughes (Dundas, Ontario) has been recognized by Golf Canada as the top male amateur golfer for 2011. The honor comes to Hughes after he finished atop the Men's 2011 National Order of Merit presented by Under Armour.
Back in August, Hughes claimed the Canadian Men's Amateur Championship that earned the 21-year old an exemption into the 2012 RBC Canadian Open at Hamilton Golf and Country Club. Hughes also captured the Glencoe Invitational earlier in the summer, plus earned medalist honors at a U.S. Open Regional Qualifier and reached the Round of 16 at the Western Amateur and the Round of 64 at the U.S. Men's Amateur.
As a junior at Kent State last spring, Hughes was the Mid-American Conference medalist. He wrapped up last season earning GCAA Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar accolades as well as GCAA All-Midwest Region and First Team All-MAC accolades.
Hughes has two top 10 finishes in five events this fall for the Golden Flashes which head into the spring ranked 18th in the county in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings and 23rd in the nation by golfstat.com.
