No. 23/26 Kent State Among The Leaders At Barona Cup
Golden Flashes open with 343 for lowest count five team round in school history
LAKESIDE, Calif. — No. 23/26 Kent State began the spring as one of only six schools in the nation to have at least five players ranked in the top 150 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. That depth was certainly on display at the Barona Collegiate Cup on Thursday as the Golden Flashes men's golf team posted a count five school record 343 (-20) in the opening round on the par 72 Barona Creek Black 2012 course.
The performance staked Kent State to a one shot lead over North Texas in a highly competitive 16-team field.
Sophomore Taylor Pendrith (Richmond Hill, Ontario) paced the low scoring squad with a career low 65 (-7) that included nine total birdies. Sophomore Corey Conners (Listowel, Ontario) and senior Mackenzie Hughes (Dundas, Ontario) were right behind as each shot a 66 (-6).
Junior Kevin Miller (Dover, Ohio) added a 71 (-1) and sophomore Kyle Kmiecik (Avon, Ohio) posted a 75 (+3).
The previous mark in the rare count five format was a 354 shot in the fourth round of the 1991 Mid-American Conference Championship at Toledo Country Club.
Second round action was was suspended at 7 p.m. PT on Thursday evening with the Golden Flashes in third place and 4-5 holes left for each golfer in the round. Final round takes place on Friday.
