SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
BALL STATE CARDINALS (7-14 overall, 2-6 MAC)
All-time series: Kent State leads, 35-13
Kent State Head Coach Bob Lindsay vs. Ball State: 27-7
Current Streak: L1
• The Golden Flashes and Cardinals duel for the 49th time. The Golden Flashes have lost to the Cardinals only 13 times in the previous 48 tries, but since falling to Kent State 22 times in 24 games between 1989 and 2002, Ball State has won five of the last 10 meetings.
• Kent State suffered its first MAC setback of the 2010-11 season in a tough 69-65 overtime setback to Ball State on Jan. 22, 2011, in the last game between the two programs. Senior Taisja Jones led all scorers with 21 points in the losing effort, while Jamilah Humes added 18 points as the only other Kent State player in double figures.
FLASH BACK: JAN. 28 AT NORTHERN ILLINOIS
Kent State's three-game winning streak was snapped with a 66-55 Mid-American Conference interdivision loss to Northern Illinois last Saturday (Jan. 28) at the Convocation Center.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Golden Flashes over the Huskies. The Flashes outshot the Huskies, 44%-40.8%, and won the turnover battle, 11-13, but the battle of the boards proved to be Kent State's downfall. Kent State, which had outrebounded the opposition, 186-161, in its five victories in 2011-12, lost the rebounding battle to Northern Illinois, 39-22, and managed just two offensive rebounds.
Freshman guard Itziar Llobet (Sant Cugat de Valles, Spain) led Kent State with 20 points, reaching double figures for the eighth time this season and second straight game. Junior forward Diamon Beckford (Upper Darby, Pa.) and junior guard Trisha Krewson (Sandusky, Ohio) each totaled eight points.
CLOSING IN ON 600 WINS
Kent State is just one win away from tallying 600 all-time victories. The Golden Flashes are aiming to join Bowling Green (686) and Toledo (622) as the only MAC schools with at least 600 wins.
Kent State's final interdivision home game of the 2011-12 season features a televised showdown Saturday (Feb. 4) against Toledo. Tip time is set for noon from the M.A.C. Center, and the game will be broadcast on SportsTime Ohio, ESPN Full Court and ESPN 3. All fans in attendance will receive scrolls and will once again have the opportunity to participate in the always intense Basketball Bingo during the game. Tickets start at just $5.
