Second-Half Push Not Enough As Kent State Women’s Basketball Falls To Toledo
Trio of Flashes finish in double figures.
KENT, Ohio -- For the third straight game, a tough first half was too much for the Kent State women's basketball team to overcome as the squad suffered a 66-55 setback to Toledo Saturday (Feb. 4) in a Mid-American Conference interdivision game at the M.A.C. Center.
The Golden Flashes (5-15, 4-6 MAC) lost despite owning the advantage in points in the paint (34-20), points off turnovers (24-12) and second chance points (12-7). The Rockets (15-7, 8-2 MAC) outshot Kent State, 44.7%-38.7%, and won the battle of the boards, 41-28, to gain the upper hand.
A trio of Kent State juniors finished the game in double figures in scoring. Forward Diamon Beckford (Upper Darby, Pa.) and guard Tamzin Barroilhet (Sainte, Maxime, France) tied for the team lead with 12 points apiece. Beckford hit double digits for the ninth time in 2011-12 while Barroilhet achieved the feat for the seventh time this season and sixth time in the last nine games. Guard Trisha Krewson (Sandusky, Ohio) tallied 11 points to join them in double digits, hitting double figures for a team-leading 12th time in 2011-12. Freshman guard Jamie Hutcheson (Ancaster, Ontario) totaled nine points, a game-high four steals and matched Barroilhet for the team lead with four assists. Freshman guard Itziar Llobet (Sant Cugat de Valles, Spain) pulled in a team-high seven rebounds.
Toledo scored 13 unanswered points in the opening four minutes of the game and raced out to a 32-18 lead, scoring 10 field goals off of 10 assists and knocking down five threes.
The Rockets opened the final 20 minutes of play on a 13-4 run over the first six minutes of the second half. The Flashes countered with a 15-5 run over the next six minutes thanks to a three by Llobet, three layups by Barroilhet and layups by Krewson, Beckford and freshman guard Dena Droste (Dewitt, Mich.) to make it a 13-point game at 50-37 with 8:35 to go. Toledo answered back with a 12-9 run to take a 16-point lead with 2:08 to play, but the Flashes clawed back to within nine with 1:14 remaining thanks to a trey by Beckford, a layup by Barroilhet and two successful free throws by Krewson. Kent State was forced to send the Rockets to the line to stop the clock, though, and the Rockets connected on four of six freebie attempts to seal the win.
Kent State outscored the Rockets, 37-34, in the second half and shot 53.3% from the field over the final 20 minutes as opposed to a 25.0% clip in the first half.
Four Toledo players finished in double figures. Senior guard Courtney Ingersoll led all scorers with 20 points – including a game-high five threes. Junior forward Lecretia Smith converted six of her seven field attempts to finish with 14 points. Senior guard Haylie Linn sank for treys and tallied 13 points. Sophomore guard Andola Dortch chipped in 12 points.
Kent State visits Ypsilanti, Mich., to square off against Eastern Michigan next Saturday (Feb. 11) in its final interdivision contest of the 2011-12 campaign. Tip time is slated for 2 p.m.
