Akron, Ohio – A combination of a slow start by Kent State (2-13, 0-2) and a hot-shooting Akron (11-4, 2-0) resulted in a 93-58 loss for the Golden Flashes at Rhodes Arena Sunday afternoon (Jan. 13).
Kent State missed ten layups before making one in the opening six minutes, giving Akron a big 21-4 lead. The Roos went on to score 54 points in the first half, the most the Golden Flashes have allowed in a half all season. 93 total points was also the most Kent State has allowed in a game all season.
The Flashes met their biggest deficit in the second half as they found themselves down by 42 with 16 minutes left to play. They found some resurgence after going on a 13-2 run to cut the Akron lead to 31, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Kent State had 27 turnovers in the game, resulting in 34 points for Akron. However, the Flashes out-rebounded the Roos 38-37, with 14 of those rebounds coming on the offensive end.
Tamzin Barroilhet led Kent State with 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals. She also picked up three assists. Freshman Heather Bachman had a career-high 11 points and six rebounds, including a 5-for-6 effort from the free-throw line.
Leslie Schaefer had a big first game back, scoring 11 points with six rebounds and two steals. Ashley Evans matched Schaefer with eleven points. Evans also had a team-leading four assists.
Four of Akron's starters finished the game scoring in double-figures. Sina King led all with 16 points and ten rebounds. Taylor Ruper followed her with 15 points, all coming from three-point distance where she hit five of her eight attempts.
Kent State returns home on Wednesday (Jan. 16) as they host the Bulls of Buffalo. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
