Gavier Named Third-Team Academic All-American
KENT, Ohio — Kent State junior women's
golfer Martina Gavier (Cordoba,
Argentina) was named Thursday (June 10) to the 2010 ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-America® Women's At-Large Third Team, as
selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America
(CoSIDA).
Gavier, who has a 3.90 grade point average in international
relations, was the medalist at the NCAA Central Regional at
three-over par, leading the Flashes to an eighth-place finish and
their fourth NCAA Championship berth. She won her first collegiate
tournament at the Mid-American Conference championship and was
named 2010 MAC Golfer of the Year, earning first-team
all-conference honors for the third straight season. Gavier had
three top-five and six top-20 finishes on the season, including her
back-to-back, late-season victories.
Gavier is also a two-time National Golf Coaches Association
All-Scholar Team selection and was named to the 2009 and 2010
Academic All-MAC teams. Internationally, she has twice represented
Argentina in the World Amateur Team Championship.
Gabby Wedding is the only other Kent State women's golfer to earn
the national accolade, garnering a spot on the second team in both
2004 and 2005.
The Women's At-Large program for Academic All-America® is one
of the toughest teams to earn a spot on, as it encompasses the
sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics,
ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, tennis and water polo.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a
student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain
a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore
athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and
be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed
Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in
Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship
sports.
