The Kent State women's golf team is back in action this
weekend as the Golden Flashes will head west for the 2010 William
K. Warren Irish Women's Golf Invitational, hosted by the University
of Notre Dame at the par-72 Warren Golf Course. This year is the
first-ever appearance for Kent State at the Warren Irish
Invitational.
Six golfers will play for Kent State this weekend. Along with the five players that will play as a team for Kent State (seniors Martina Gavier and Sarah Bradley and juniors Mercedes Germino, Mandi Morrow and Shamira Marshall), freshman Erin Hawe will play as an individual.
Both days of action will have a 9 a.m. shotgun start, with
Saturday's action bringing 36 holes of action and Sunday concluding
with 18 holes. Live stats are available through golfstat.com.
Scouting the Flashes
Kent State wrapped up a strong showing at their season-opening tournament Sept. 26, as the Golden Flashes finished second at the Mary Fossum Invitational, hosted by Michigan State at Forest Akers West Golf Course.
The Golden Flashes, who led the 11-team field after two rounds,
could not hold off a strong charge by Notre Dame. The Irish, led by
Nicole Zhang's nine-under 207, edged Kent State 890-895. Michigan
State, which had entered the tournament as the five-time defending
champions, placed third with 896.
Senior Martina Gavier led Kent State with an even-par 216 after shooting a one-over 73 on Sunday, which was the second-best round by the 63-golfer field. Gavier carded four birdies in Sunday's final round, finishing with two in the last five holes.
Scouting the Tournament Field
Kent State is part of a 13-team field this weekend
at Notre Dame: Cincinnati, Georgia State, Illinois, Indiana, Kent
State, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio
State, Toledo and UT-San Antonio. Michigan, Notre Dame and Toledo
all participated with Kent State last weekend at the Mary Fossum
Invitational.
Notre Dame is coming off their win at the Mary
Fossum Invitational, while Ohio State is currently ranked #18 in
the most recent Golf World/NGCA women's coaches' poll.
Kent State will begin Saturday's first and second rounds at holes
5-7 and will be paired with Louisville and Georgia State.
