Womens Golf Among Leaders after Las Vegas First Round
BOULDER CITY, Nev. - The Kent State women's golf team is currently tied for fifth in the 17-team Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. The Golden Flashes are knotted with the host UNLV Rebels with an eight-over 296.
On the shoulders of a blistering nine-under 63 by Emily Tubert, Arkansas owns a 17-stroke lead after the first day. Washington is second with a six-over 294, while Louisville and Arizona are a stroke off the Huskies' rate.
Showing no effects from a long flight from Argentina after participating in the World Amateur Team Championship, Martina Gavier (Cordoba, Argentina) led the Golden Flashes Monday with a two-under 70, which included a string of four birdies in five holes on the back nine.
Juniors Shamira Marshall (Macedonia, Ohio) and Mandi Morrow (Kent, Ohio) are tied for 32nd overall after carding matching three-over 75s Monday. Marshall was hampered by double bogeys to start and end her round, but a trio of birdies aided her score. Morrow shot even-par 36 on the back nine with three birdies in a span of six holes.
Mercedes Germino (Necochea, Argentina) rounded out Kent State's scoring with a four-over 76, aided by three birdies. Freshman Erin Hawe (Walton, New Zealand), playing in her first tournament as part of Kent State's first five, finished with a nine-over 81.
Senior Sarah Bradley (Cambridge, New Zealand), playing as an individual, shot a one-over 73, tied for best among unattached golfers.
Kent State begins the second round of action Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 8:10 a.m. off the first tee. The Flashes will be paired with Arizona and UNLV.
