Kent State In Seventh After Puerto Rico Classic First Round
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The Kent State women's golf team had a strong showing Sunday in the first round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic at Rio Mar Country Club. The Golden Flashes combined for an 18-over 306, placing them six strokes out of second place.
Senior Sarah Bradley (Cambridge, New Zealand) carded two birdies on her first three holes on her way to a one-over 73, placing her in a six player tie for seventh place. Bradley finished with three birdies after starting her round on the par-5 No. 11.
Junior Mercedes Germino (Necochea, Argentina) finished day one with a four-over 76, aided by birdies on No. 16 and her final hole, No. 7. Germino struggled with a triple-bogey on the par-3 No. 3.
Junior Mandi Morrow (Kent, Ohio) had a pair of birdies on her way to a six-over 78. After starting with a triple-bogey on the par-3 No. 10, Morrow steadied to finish tied for 42nd overall with 13 golfers.
Senior Martina Gavier (Cordoba, Argentina) couldn't get in the groove on day one, finishing with a seven-over 79 with just one birdie on the par-3 No. 7. Gavier is tied for 55th with 22 other golfers.
Junior Shamira Marshall (Macedonia, Ohio) rounded out Kent State's squad with an eight-over 80.
Freshman Erin Hawe (Walton, New Zealand), who is competing as an individual at the three-day event, battled through a tough stretch on the last three holes of the front nine and finished with a 91.
Just six golfers shot at or under par in the 98-golfer field; Alabama's Camilla Lennarth posted a two-under 70 to lead the Crimson Tide to a two-under 286 and a 14-stroke lead on the 18-team field.
Action continues Monday morning with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Kent State will start on holes 5-10; the Golden Flashes are paired with Florida State, SMU and Northwestern.
