Women's Golf Preview: Flashes Set to Challenge in Lady Buckeye Invite

The Kent State women's golf team will play in its final regular season tournament this weekend when the Golden Flashes stay in Ohio for the Lady Buckeye Invitational, hosted by the Ohio State University.
The Scarlet Course at the Ohio State University Golf Club is a par-72, 6,275-yard course. Live stats will be available through Golf Stat.
This is the seventh consecutive year Kent State will participate in the Lady Buckeye Invitational and 12th time in Kent State's 13-year program history. The Golden Flashes have twice won the Lady Buckeye, which is tied for third-most in the tournament's 30-year history. Kent State first won the tournament in 2002 and followed up with a team title in 2008. Kent State's Gabby Wedding was the individual winner in 2002.
Scouting the Flashes
Kent State placed 17th at the 23-team Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic April 1-3 hosted at the University of Georgia Golf Course. Senior Martina Gavier (Cordoba, Argentina) was the top finisher for the Golden Flashes, shooting an 11-over 227. Juniors Mandi Morrow (Kent, Ohio) and Shamira Marshall (Macedonia, Ohio) finished in the top 60 against a field that included all 23 teams are ranked in the top 80 nationally by Golf Week and 41of the nation's top 100 individuals.
Scouting the Tournament Field
Kent State is one of 12 teams competing in Lady Buckeye Invitational. Joining the Flashes and the host Ohio State Buckeyes are Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Penn State, Wisconsin and Xavier.
According to Golf Week's rankings, No. 34 Kent State is one of 10 teams ranked in the top 100 nationally and one of six in the top 50. Iowa State is the top ranked team of the field, coming in at No. 16 overall.
The host Buckeyes are the defending champions; Michigan State's Laura Kueny, who graduated last season, was the 2010 individual champion.

The 12-time defending Mid-American Conference champion Golden Flashes will aim to defend their MAC title April 22-24 at the 2011 MAC Women's Golf Championship at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.
