Women’s Golf Takes Fifth at Lady Buckeye Invitational

Germino finishes eighth for sixth top 20 finish of the season

The Kent State women's golf team took fifth place at the 2012 Lady Buckeye Invitational Sunday, hosted by the Ohio State University at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.

Chilly conditions again hampered Kent State's effort for low scores. Only three players in the field broke par on Sunday; coupled with the challenging conditions from Saturday, the Scarlet Course gave up just four sub-par rounds. On the other extreme, the top 20 golfers of the tournament combined for 12 rounds of 80 strokes or more.

Senior Mercedes Germino (Necochea, Argentina) shot a three-over 75 on Sunday in the tournament's final round to finish alone in eighth place as Kent State's top finisher. Three bogeys were the lone blemishes on Germino's card in the final round.

Senior Mandi Morrow (Kent, Ohio) shot a four-over 76 for the second straight round on Sunday to move up to a tie for 25th place overall.

After entering Sunday's action in third place, freshman Jennifer Ha (Calgary, Alberta) got behind early in the final round, shooting six-over through her first five holes to finish with a nine-over 81. Ha still managed to notch a top 20 finish, tying for 11th place in the 69-golfer field.

Junior Jackie Yanch (Barrie, Ontario) trimmed her score again on Sunday, turning in a six-over 78, aided by a birdie on the par 4 No. 3. Also counting for Kent State on Sunday was sophomore Erin Hawe (Walton, New Zealand), who shot an eight-over 80 to stay tied for 38th place.

Senior Shamira Marshall (Macedonia, Ohio) was unable to keep pace from Saturday's morning round, as she shot an 83 on Sunday to finish tied for 38th place. Freshman Natalie Goodson (Hudson, Ohio) competed as an unattached individual for her second collegiate competition, shooting a 12-over 84 to finish in 63rd place.

Ohio State, led by medalist Rachel Rohanna and her four-under 212, claimed the team title in the "play-six-score-four" format by a 16-stroke advantage over Michigan State.

Kent State is back in action next weekend, April 27-29, at the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championships in Fishers, Ind. The Golden Flashes will aim capture their 14th consecutive MAC title.
