Marshall Leads the Field After Day One at MAC Championships
Senior fires even-par 72 to pace the Golden Flashes; Kent State trails by three strokes heading into day two
FISHERS, Ind. – Led by an even par 72 by senior Shamira Marshall (Macedonia, Ohio), the Kent State women's golf team is three strokes back after combining for a 13-over 301 on the first day of action at the 2012 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championship at Hawthorns Golf and Country Club.
Marshall was the lone golfer to shoot par on a day filled with little wind and plenty of sun. Marshall answered a bogey on the par-3 No. 15 with a birdie on the ensuing hole – a par five. She owns a one-stroke lead on the field.
Sophomore Erin Hawe (Walton, New Zealand) is tied for seventh with a three-over 75, aided by a birdie on the par-4 No. 13. Hawe was steady, carding 13 pars on the day.
Both senior Mercedes Germino (Necochea, Argentina) and freshman Jennifer Ha (Calgary, Alberta) are tied for 11th after shooting five-over 77 on the opening day. Germino had birdies on No. 8 and No. 17 to aid in her effort, while Ha birdied No. 9 and No. 15.
Senior Mandi Morrow (Kent, Ohio) rounded out Kent State's day with a nine-over 81 to stand in a tie for 28th place.
Kent State trails Ball State by three strokes heading into Saturday's second-round action, which is slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. Kent State, Ball State and Toledo will be in the final five pairings on Saturday, starting at 10:10 a.m. off the first tee.
Kent State's deficit marks just the third time in the MAC Championship's 14-year history the Golden Flashes did not have the tournament lead going into day two (1999 vs. Ohio, 2004 vs. Western Michigan). Kent State is aiming to extend its streak of consecutive MAC Championships to 14, the longest active streak in the MAC in any sport.
