Senior shoots one-over on Friday to help Kent State up the leaderboard

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Kent State women's golf team benefitted from a solid round from senior Mercedes Germino on Friday, as her one-over 73 helped the Golden Flashes move up the leaderboard on day two of the 2012 NCAA Women's Golf East Regional, hosted by Penn State at the PSU Blue Course.

Kent State carded a team score of 301 on Friday, inching up the leaderboard. Kent State is currently in a three-way tie for 13th place with Oklahoma State and Augusta State with matching 607 scores through two days. The Golden Flashes are eight strokes from the cut line; the top eight teams from three regionals advance to the NCAA Championship.

Germino (Necochea, Argentina) utilized a pair of birdies to aid in her effort, including a key birdie on the par 4 no. 7. It was part of a two-under string through six holes mid-round, helping her score as the wind began to pick up on Friday.

Senior Mandi Morrow (Kent, Ohio) shot a three-over 75, with birdies on No. 5 and No. 13 to bolster her score. Morrow is tied with Germino with a two-day total of two-over 149, which is good for 31st place in the 125-golfer field.

Freshman Jennifer Ha (Calgary, Alberta) matched Morrow's three-over 75 on Friday, as two birdies on the front nine – both on the par fives – helped her post a one-over 37 to start the day. Ha finished strong with five straight pars and is tied for 55th place.

No. 7 was giving to fellow senior Shamira Marshall (Macedonia, Ohio), as she holed out from 135 yards for an eagle on the par-4 hole. From there, the senior notched eight straight pars on her way to a six-over 78.

Sophomore Erin Hawe (Walton, New Zealand) rounded out the team's performance on Friday with a 12-over 84.

Kent State will tee off from the No. 1 tee with Oklahoma State and Augusta State at 12 p.m. in the second wave of the day.
