Kilgore Places Third at World Team Trials

Oklahoma City -  Kent State's Dustin Kilgore reached another milestone in his wrestling career Friday, earning a true third place at the U.S. World Team Trials.  Competing at 96KG (211.5 lbs), well above his NCAA weight class, Kilgore went 4-1 on the day and reached the finals of the challenge tournament.

By placing third, the 2011 NCAA champion earned the ability to take an Olympic redshirt for the 2011-12 season and spend the next season at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.  Kilgore began his day with a convincing 8-4, 4-0 win over Brent Jones of the Cavalier Wrestling Club.  He then needed three periods to defeat J.D. Bergman (NYAC) 2-3, 4-0, 5-3.  Bergman was recently named USA Wrestling's 2010 Freestyle Wrestler of the Year.

Kilgore then made his way into the challenge tournament finals with a 1-0, 2-1 triumph over Brandon Halsey (Sunkist Kids).  With the right to wrestle former World Team member Jake Varner on the line, Kilgore fell to Chad Hanke (NWRTC) 1-0, 0-4, 3-2 in the finals.  In a battle for a true third place, Kilgore topped No. 1 seed Jack Jensen of the Gator Wrestling Club 1-2, 2-0, 4-2.
