Mitcheff Wins Cleveland State Open; Four Other Flashes Place in Top Six
CLEVELAND - Sophomore Stevie Mitcheff (125) went 5-0 en route to an individual title Saturday at the Cleveland State Open. Four other Golden Flashes placed in the top six at Woddling Gymnasium, which hosted 250 participants from 27 different schools.
Mitcheff cruised through his first three matches with a 17-0 technical fall over Michigan State's Chris Lyon, a second period pin of Cleveland State's B.J. Miller and 6-0 shutout of Edinboro's Korey Mines. Mitcheff then topped Central Michigan's Joe Roth 6-2 in the semifinals, before outlasting Indiana's Zach Zimmer 8-6 in the finals.
Kent State was also represented in 125-pound bracket by Troy Opfer, who wrestled unattached and claimed a sixth place. Opfer went 3-2 with a pair of first period pins and 12-0 major decision.
Sophomore Tommy Sasfy placed at an open tournament for the second time this season, claiming a fourth at 149. Sasfy finished 4-2 and earned a spot in the semifinals after winning his first three bouts.
Sophomore Keith Witt (184) finished fifth with a 5-2 mark. After dropping his opening bout, Witt turned it up a notch, recording three pins and a 5-0 shutout during a string of four straight victories.
Senior Sli Bostelman (165) made his way into the semifinals, before settling for a sixth place.
Redshirt freshman Ethan Taylor (174) won three straight matches in the consolation bracket, but came up short of placing.
