Mallie Shuster Named MAC Wrestler of the Week

KENT, Ohio - Kent State junior Mallie Shuster (Newville, Pa.) was named Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week Wednesday after a pair of weekend dual meet victories over Top 20 opponents from Ohio State and Missouri.

Shuster topped Ohio State’s Josh Demas 6-1 on Sunday. Demas entered the meet ranked No. 18 with a record of 13-4.  On Friday, Shuster downed Missouri’s Drake Houdashelt 10-5.  Houdashelt was ranked No.14 with a record of 8-1. 

With the victories, Shuster improved to 13-7 on the year and 5-1 in dual meets.  Previously unranked, Shuster moved into the No. 17 spot this week according to InterMat, Amateur Wrestling News and Wrestling Insider NewsMagazine.

Several Kent State starters and most of its backups and redshirts return to action Sunday at the Cleveland State Open.  The Golden Flashes, ranked No. 21 by the NWCA, open MAC dual competition Wednesday, Dec. 21 at Northern Illinois, immediately followed by a dual with Cleveland State.
