Game Day Preview: Women's Soccer Heads to Florida for 2010 Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic

For the first time this season, the Kent State women's soccer team will play a pair of games on the weekend as the Golden Flashes will take part in the 2010 Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic Sept. 3-5, hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University.

 

Kent State will battle the host Eagles Friday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. before taking on Miami (Fla.) Sunday, Sept. 5 at 11 a.m. Arkansas rounds out the four-team field.

The Series: Friday's game against Florida Gulf Coast and Sunday's contest versus Miami (Fla.) mark the first-ever meetings for Kent State against either team.

 

In A Flash: Kent State is 1-1-1 all-time against the ACC (1-0-0 vs. Virginia Tech, 0-0-1 vs. Maryland, 0-1-0 vs. N.C. State) and the Golden Flashes are 2-0-0 when facing members of the Atlantic Sun (1-0-0 vs. Campbell, 1-0-0 vs. Stetson).


Scouting the Flashes: Kent State (0-1-1) posted a 13-4 shots on goal advantage Aug. 29 against regional foe Cleveland State, but the Golden Flashes settled for a 2-2 draw against the Vikings in Cleveland. Freshman Jessacca Gironda (Akron, Ohio) led Kent State with a goal and an assist, while senior Kelly Heaton (Mississauga, Ontario) registered KSU's other score. Senior Kellyn Flanagan (Medina, Ohio) also had an assist in the contest.


Scouting the Opponents: Florida Gulf Coast (1-2-0) is coming off a 3-1 setback to Miami (Fla.) Aug. 31 in Coral Gables. The Eagles scored in the game's 88th minute when Amanda Goble converted on a penalty kick. On the year, Jess Swartzentruber leads with two goals, while Jenci Villaverde has a pair of assists.

 

Miami (2-1-1) opened their home schedule Tuesday against Florida Gulf Coast, posting a 3-1 victory. After a scoreless first half, the Hurricanes broke the game open with a trio of goals in just over three minutes. Brittany Steinbruch, who had the bookend goals during the scoring rush, is now the all-time leading scorer in Miami history with 31 career strikes.

 

Next Up: The Golden Flashes return north to travel to Pittsburgh Sunday, Sept. 12 for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
