Kent State Soccer tips Valparaiso in Exhibition Action, 1-0

 

Newcomer Dutton strikes in the first half for game's lone score

 

VALPARAISO, Ind. – The Kent State women's soccer team took the field for its first intercollegiate action of the season Sunday afternoon, as the Golden Flashes came away with a 1-0 victory over Valparaiso at Eastgate Field in an exhibition contest.

 

Sophomore and Kent State newcomer Jaclyn Dutton (Bridgeport, Ohio) scored the game's lone goal, beating Valparaiso goalkeeper Kristen Manski in the 31st minute. It was Dutton's lone shot on the day.

 

Overall, head coach Rob Marinaro was able to get a look at various newcomers in the exhibition contest. Joining Dutton in the starting lineup were freshmen Stephanie Haugh (Richmond Hill, Ontario) and Mariah Sidwell (London, Ontario).

 

Veterans Jenni Stapleton (New Albany, Ohio) and Hannah Newhouse (Strongsville, Ohio) played all 90 minutes in helping the Kent State defense post the shutout. Senior goalkeeper Kelly Sherwood (Strongsville, Ohio) and junior Julie Keslar (Akron, Ohio) combined to make four saves.

 

Kent State begins regular season action Friday, Aug. 19 against Cleveland State. First touch at Zoeller Field is slated for 5 p.m.
