Women's Soccer Preview - Kent State travels to Toledo, Ball State

Already through the first half of Mid-American Conference play, the Kent State women’s soccer team (9-5-0, 3-3-0 MAC) will face two of the top teams in the conference on the road this weekend when the Golden Flashes head to Toledo Friday, Oct. 15 for a 4 p.m. contest, followed by a Sunday, Oct. 17 match against Ball State.

Scouting the Golden Flashes

• Kent State is coming off a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind home win over Northern Illinois Oct. 9. In that game, senior Vanessa Salerno (Etobicoke, Ontario) assisted on the first two Kent State goals before scoring the game-winner in the 88th minute.

 

• With her sixth assist of the season on the game-winner against Northern Illinois, junior Megan Repas (Avon, Ohio) is now tied for seventh in team history with 13 career helpers.

 

• Senior goalkeeper Kelly Sherwood (Strongsville, Ohio) is second all-time in various Kent State career records. She is second in career shutouts (12), victories (27) and minutes played (5,643). She also earned the second assist of her career in the second half of Kent State’s win over Northern Illinois.

 

• Kent State’s win over Northern Illinois ended a streak of four straight games against the Huskies that went into double overtime.

 

• This season, the Golden Flashes are 7-1-0 in games decided by one goal.

 

Scouting the Opponents

Toledo (7-5-2, 5-0-1 MAC) extended their unbeaten streak to six games with a 2-2 draw at home against Akron Oct. 9. In the game, the Rockets scored the game-tying goal in the 81st minute. The tandem of Kristen Lynn and Rachel MacLeod have combined for 13 goals and eight assists this season.

 

All-Time Series: Kent State leads all-time against Toledo, 8-7-1, but the last four contests have been in favor of the Rockets. The last six meetings have been decided by one goal.

 

Ball State (9-4-2, 4-1-1 MAC) will host Buffalo Friday prior to Sunday’s contest versus Kent State. The Cardinals are unbeaten in their last five contests and have just one loss in their last 10 games; a 3-1 setback at Western Michigan Sept. 23. Jasmine Moses and her team-best seven goals lead Ball State offensively this season.

 

All-Time Series: Kent State trails the all-time series with the Cardinals, 5-6-2, but the Golden Flashes have won the last two meetings, outscoring Ball State 8-1. Kent State is 0-4-2 all-time against Ball State at Muncie, Ind., but one of those ties came during the 2005 MAC Tournament; Kent State prevailed in penalty kicks, 3-1.

The Golden Flashes return home for their final home stand of the regular season next weekend. Kent State will host Akron Oct. 21 before entertaining Ohio Oct. 23.
